A Travellerspoint blog

5 more days.

Waiting until the last minute is my charm.

semi-overcast

I have so many things to do before my trip. Anything from laundry, to buying a digital camera, to finishing school work, to cleaning the house, to calling VISA and looking at Eurail passes. Aye!

I still cannot believe that I'm going. I'm embarking on my first trip alone. I don't think it will hit me until I'm standing in the Valencia airport and everyone is speaking Spanish!

26.03.2007 by MarsVolta2

Hello Heather. I'm sleepy and delirious, but cant wait to share some photos when I actually get somewhere!

27.03.2007 by therook

Hows the weather? Is the first stop in Spain or was it the Azores. and I asked my grandpa what island we came from and it was Sao Miguel. The Dali Museum is in Spain too. Take Care :)

28.03.2007 by MarsVolta2

In España. The weather is nice, it stopped raining! Check out my photos! How is life in Sacramento?

30.03.2007 by therook

Its good, we are going down to the Mars Volta concert today (the 30th) fun fun. Its super nice here, sunny and warm :) My God that city looks spectacular! I wish I lived in a city that had gates like that. So I take it you found a camera you liked. I'm trying to find one too and if you like that one I'd love to know what kind it is. Those pictures really are great, do you know alot of spanish or does everyone pretty much speak english? Our downstairs neighbor moved out so its just us in the house now, I had a feeling that he hated us. Hope your not drinking the water (or is that just in Mexico :(

30.03.2007 by MarsVolta2

hello. Mars volta sounds great! I got a Canon um.. Powershot SD1000. It is very nice, but for some reason I cant get pictures onto this computer right now. I hope nothing is wrong! ..Um, I´ve had to do my best at speaking Spanish. I feel like not many people speak english. The place I´m staying does not at all. My spanish class at city helped greatly, but sometimes I´m still at a loss. Peaople in travel areas speak english, ie airport, train station, tourist spots. But if you want to go to real places in spain, spanish is a must! Oy, at least I can order food. The water here is okay, but I´m sick now. I switched to bottled water. WOW no downstairs neighbor...weird! Well hope you had fun at the concert!

31.03.2007 by therook

The Concert was so fucking awsome! we got to meet Omar, Marcel, Ikey, Juan, and Adrian. Cedric was sick and went home right after the show :( But very cool. Im sorry your sick, hope its not throw-up sick. Were to next?

01.04.2007 by MarsVolta2

after I leave madrid, I´m going to salobrena. thankfully. The city is too big for me, its like being alone in newyork. did I mention the cockroaches?

03.04.2007 by therook

Oh God! those cockroaches are horrid :( thats shit man. Thats weird how you have to have a key to get out of a building, what if there was a fire and you couldn't find your key, you would burn alive! Hope the next place is better.

03.04.2007 by MarsVolta2

Yeah..I guess they would burn alive! oh no! Glad to hear the concert was awesome! How is the planning for your trip to down under coming?

05.04.2007 by therook

Good I just got done booking all the hostels and stuff. My little brother toured Europe for a month and didn't book any hostels and spent a couple of nights on the street :( so I decided to book all my hostels ahead. Does your camera battery last long? Its such a shame that America doesn't have that kinda architecture or fountains. Honestly its so amazing and beautiful. I heard that the trains in Italy are horrific hope thats not the case in Spain, damn those monopolies!

06.04.2007 by MarsVolta2

Aye, I would only sleep on the street if i absolutely HAD to. I mean, I did pay 80 bucks to stay somewhere in Madrid. its always colder at night than you think... your brother is a badass. Camera battery is very good. I havent charged it for a couple days, but I brought a converter ..they have different voltage here.. and will usually charge it at night when I sleep. I know! it sucks being in a country thats only 300 years old, and not from 1100 like Portugal and 15 or 16 something for spain! so we dont have any great old stuff :( Hm. italy is weird. Id love to go there. the trains here are great. they run on time...so do the busses! Well, italy DOES have the mafia.. the greatest monopoly ever.

07.04.2007 by therook

Thats fun that you met some people. That gay bar sounds crazy. were they the only other travelers you met so far? The days have been super nice here.We have a rat problem in the house (or atleast my room) they crawl around in the floor at night and along the windows, big fruit rats...those bastards. At least its no New York with those huge dog rats. I think Im gonna buy the same camera that you have, it looks like it takes good pictures, and has a decsent battery life? I cant spell but thats ok. What do you eat? do you go out to restraunts or just local markets? I bet theres some super good food there, oh yeah.

09.04.2007 by MarsVolta2

I met one woman in Valencia, and we stayed together and had some cider and such. But other than that i really havent met too many folks. In Madrid I stayed in hotels so it was just myself. Oh, and one spanish guy i talked to one night and we made pasta. If you are alone, its better in the hostels. Like last night I just talked to a bunch of people here from all over. oh god, rats...thats terrible. yuck yuck. your landlord should do something immediately about that! Battery is good. I havent charged it... in 3 days. I guess its about that time again. Ive been eating a lot of pasta. its cheap. restaurants cost a lot... but i eat there too because i want to try the spanish food. the drinks are fucking so cheap, you might as well just drink and not eat!!

10.04.2007 by therook

You weren't alone in Madrid, you had the roches. The tarantino/rodriguez movie grindhouse came out in theaters. Dunno if you know which one it is but it looks super cool. Giant walls and a cool gate is what every city needs as its entrence. Or better yet each house, and when someone knocks you can look down on them from above and maybe let them in...and a big organ in every living room across the country.... hhhmmm. looked like it was gonna rain there :( poop

10.04.2007 by MarsVolta2

where did you get your power adapter?

11.04.2007 by MarsVolta2

Alex told me about the tarantino movie.. i havent heard of it otherwise. hehe, i think i had an organ that size in my house, every window on the street would be broken! no worries, i got rain here too. Power adaptor: at best buy. but youll need a different one than me. look it up online. you might get one at target too. ... I am in portugal now! its amazingly beautiful. My flight to the azores is tomorrow and i am sooo excited! uh, but im nervous because one guy said its mostly camping there, and i have no tent! yike!

14.04.2007 by therook

Camping, ha thats gonna be interesting. Yeah I saw GrindHouse in the theaters, that movies is fucking awesome! There both really funny but a pulpfiction kinda way, fantastic. I can't wait to hear about the Azores. I heard from some people that portugal was kinda "getto" but I am anxious to hear what you think of it. Take care

15.04.2007 by MarsVolta2

ghetto eh? i would say a little more poor than spain. but the people are very friendly. at least in the azores. i will have tons of pictures when i get back to lisbon. did you buy a camera yet? when do you go to NZ? in june?

18.04.2007 by therook

I think I'm gonna buy the same camera as you. I leave May 20th yaaaayyy, I cannot wait but I will be going in the middle of their winter so weather will not be my friend, maybe Ill get a good thunderstorm though, those are so fantastic. You can look up their birth records? thats kick ass I totally want to hear about that. Its crazy you need a car, do many people have cars there? I pictured alot of local busses in my head, dunno were I got that idea?

18.04.2007 by MarsVolta2

Portugal looks so beautiful, I want to go ssoo bad!

21.04.2007 by MarsVolta2

Oh May 20 is very soon! The weather there in the winter is actually pretty mild. It never seemed to get very cold. Hopefully you will have good luck like i did when i was there. Um, I couldnt look up the records becasue i didnt have the church they were at (there were like 10 churches on each island so i couldnt even guess!)..so im not any further. Most people had cars weirdly. Some would take the busses to work in the morning. mostly women. Its okay, i thought there would be more busses too!!

21.04.2007 by therook

So Pico is the place to go. Its looks nice, like a quiet place to retire, slower pace of life. Im sorry you couldn't find out more about your family, I don't know what church mine is from either :( I didn't know you went to Australia?

24.04.2007 by MarsVolta2

I totally thought i replied to you. damnit! Pico was very nice. but be prepared to do nothing! Yeah, i went to australia and new zealand about 4 years ago. i liked them both a lot. for different reasons. New zealand was beautiful and green and australia was interesting with bigger cities. so... enjoy both! I am coming home today! yay!
